Hi, I am Terence Corkin. I am a Minister in the Uniting Church in Australia and for 15 years I was General Secretary (CEO) of its national operations through the Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia. In that role I experienced the massive changes created by increased community expectations about governance. As both the CEO and as a Board member I had to interpret business language and practices into something that makes sense for a church.
I have seen many faith based Boards struggle to understand the necessity for good governance practices and find it hard to implement them. So in 2016, after concluding my General Secretary role, I established Faith Based Boards. Our mission is to support Chairs, CEO’s and Boards of faith based organizations to understand and effectively implement contemporary governance practices. I speak your language and can translate the language of business into the values and practices that you hold dear.
In 2015 I became a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and received national accreditation as a mediator (NMAS). I hold additional qualifications in law, theology, and Family Dispute Resolution. As a member of the Executive of the Christian Conference of Asia I have assisted it in strengthening its governance “infrastructure” and worked cross culturally.
In addition to this ministry, I have published a book on consensus building (The Church Guide For Making Decisions Together, Abingdon, 2017), lead workshops on conflict and working together well (makingchurchdecisions.com), have a mediation practice on the Far South Coast of NSW (winwinmediation.com.au), provide conflict intervention services for churches and community groups and provide Professional / Pastoral Supervision for Ministers and other Church leaders.
